Who invented the PCR test?

This guy.

His name is Kary Mullis, in 1983 while driving to his cabin for the weekend he came up with the idea for polymerase chain reaction or PCR to detect, select and work with even small amounts of DNA sequence. He was working with Cetus Corporation in California at the time.

DNA sequencing and PCR have multiple uses for humanity, like the creation, detection, and monitoring of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), genetic engineering, gene modification, transgenics, hybridization, synthetic biology, directed evolution, and even for cloning an evil twin.

RT-PCR is an added step where you convert an RNA into a DNA and then do the PCR testing, it’s a clean and efficient process that is based on the original PCR test.

Mullis’s work had an immense impact on the field of chemistry and it completely changed the way we work with DNA in the field of diagnostics and healthcare.

He was an eccentric scientist, who did not go along with his colleagues, but they tolerated him because of his genius. In one instance fisticuffs came out, you do not want to be in that situation with a scientist that great.

He left Cetus with a few months’ salary and a 10K USD prize for his invention, which was legally owned by Cetus. This technology was sold to Roche for a whopping 300M Dollars in 1991.

And did we mention that Mullis got the Noble Prize for this invention in 1993?

We at NirogGyan fondly remember Dr. Kary Mullis. NirogGyan is working towards quality Health Education and Patient Engagement via simplified and Smart Lab Reports.
