The bones in our body are live, growing, and changing all the time. But let’s not kid ourselves…none of us take care of our bones!

Bone health is important at every age and stage of life. The skeleton is our body’s storage bank for Calcium — a mineral that is necessary for our bodies to function. Calcium is especially important as building blocks for bones.

Loss of bone strength can lead to osteoporosis — a disorder in which bones become very fragile and more likely to break. Older aged with osteoporosis are most vulnerable to breaks in the wrist, hip, and spine. These fractures can seriously limit mobility and independence.

Fortunately, there are many things we can do at every age to keep our bones strong and healthy.

2. Get plenty of calcium and minerals. Calcium not only helps build bone tissues but also helps in muscle contraction and blood clotting. It is important to eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of calcium. Women need to be particularly careful. Postmenopausal women and men over age 70 should take in 1,200 mg of calcium per day. Men over age 70 should get 800 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily.

3. Get some sun for D’s sake. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium. The recommended amount is 600 iu per day. And the best part is it’s out there available naturally. Also available in foods like — Salmon, Tuna, mushroom, Almond milk, Soy milk, Orange juice, cereals, oatmeals.

4. Maintain a healthy weight. Excessive as well as less weight is not good for your bones as your bones maintain your structural integrity. More or less pressure on them can lead to overburdening or weakening.
