Kala-azar, also known as visceral leishmaniasis, is a severe parasitic disease transmitted through infected sandfly bites. It affects organs like the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, causing symptoms like fever, weight loss, and an enlarged belly. Without prompt treatment, kala-azar can be life-threatening.

Annually 70000 people die from this disease. Mostly because of a lack of awareness about it.

While the disease is still not eradicated, there was one person who slowed it down and saved countless lives.

In today’s Healthcare Visionary series, we talk about — Upendranath Brahmachari. He was an Indian scientist and doctor, born on December 19, 1873, in the state of Bihar. He made significant contributions to the field of medicine, especially in the treatment of kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis).

Dr. Brahmachari’s groundbreaking work led to the discovery of a medicine called Urea Stibamine, a highly effective treatment for kala-azar. This discovery revolutionized the medical approach to the disease, saving countless lives. His dedication and innovative thinking greatly impacted healthcare in India during the early 20th century.

He was knighted in 1934 for his contribution to medicine and science by the British-Indian Government.

People like Dr. Brahmachari move the world forward with their selfless works.
