That’s how our startup’s pet dog sleeps. And how babies (usually) sleep as well. In absolute peace.
Now that we are adults (and still humans), do we also get a similar quality of blissful sleep every night?
Sound sleep for 7–8 hours is one of the biggest metabolism regulators in our physical existence.
Which is why the lack of it not only makes you tired, cranky, and crave sugar-laden tea/coffee) but also -
1. Increases cortisol, the excess of which hormone disrupts our hunger levels (despite adequate food intake) and leads to muscle loss & fat gain.
2. Decreases cognitive functioning: It dulls the activity in the
brain’s frontal lobe — the place of decision making and impulse control.
Clearly, lack of sleep leads you to make bad decisions for yourself and thus, leads to decreased well-being!
Try some of the following tips to get the hallowed “better sleep”:
1. Our body naturally has its own internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle (the circadian rhythm), which is repeated roughly every 24 hours. To regulate this rhythm, expose yourself to bright light during the day and slowly decrease your exposure to light through the evening till night.
2. Don’t consume caffeine late in the evening. Avoid alcohol, nicotine and heavy meals too during that time.
3. Avoid napping during the day.
4. Be consistent with your sleeping and waking up time.
5. Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, clean, and helps you relax & de-stress!
6. Have your dinner at least 2–3 hours before you go to sleep.
7. Develop a relaxing bedtime ritual.
8. Exercise regularly but not very close to your bedtime.
9. Sleep on a comfortable mattress.
10. Limit usage of electronic devices at least 60 minutes prior to bedtime.
Simple. So let’s do it, to live happier, healthier, and more productive lives ✌
